Bell Study: Sinusoidal Analysis & Reconstruction (2025)

By Timothy Gmeiner (with advising by Marcelo Caetano)

About: This project aims to answer how the acoustic and recorded properties of an inharmonic waveform can be digitally reconstructed by exploring sound resynthesis through sinusoidal modeling. This project was inspired by my obsession with audiovisually and spatially reimagining Jonathan Harvey’s sinusoidal masterpiece “Mortuos Plango Vivos Voco”, in which the recording of a Winchester tenor bell was decomposed into its sinusoidal components and rebuilt as a nine-minute electronic spectacle.

This project is still under construction, however, in my research I’ve created a hand-guide of sorts that aims to explain the fundamental steps of sinusoidal modeling as a means of sound reconstruction which can be read below. Stay tuned for updates.
