DJ Spare Change is a legendary DJ from Dayton, OH who's won multiple awards and competitions for the past decade at least. Beyond that he's a cool dude. So I was excited to get the opportunity to build a logo for him. After a few iffy drafts, I came up with an idea I was actually excited about. DJs (as well as vinyl-heads) know that you typically place a coin on the cartridge head to weigh the needle down to the groove if the arm has lost weight near it's rear. With the name 'Spare Change', I thought it would be cool to re-create that idea in the form of a logo. Spare helped me navigate the intricacies of cartridge-styles until we landed on something. The circle around the needle with his name is a nod to 90's-era hip-hop labels, in this case Bad Boy, of which he was a fan. We wanted to build something that could fit alongside everything from label logos to corporate logos such as Red Bull.
